For this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup we made a series of stop motion animations. These featured a modified Subbuteo football team.
Women’s teams are not well represented by Subbuteo yet, so we altered a team to create a representative from each of the countries in the tournament. If you’re not familiar with Subbuteo, they’re small plastic football players stuck on discs. It was big in the 80s (or maybe the 70s…). The tiny size of the figurines mean very small moves in an animation.
We used Dragonframe to shoot the FIFA stop motion. The vision was to create quick GIF style content to be shared as and when goals were scored and matches were won (or lost).
Peter Ellmore used our latest bit of kit, the Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens. to shoot the video in our London studio. Given the power of this hardware we were able to get right up close to the action. This gives the viewer the sense that they are right there in the game. This helped to bring the miniature figures to life and to capture all the drama and the action from the pitch.
