We teamed up with Disney and Primark to bring these cute Munchlings, food-themed plush toys to life using stop motion.

To help us prepare for the cuteness overload of this project, we visited the Cute exhibition at Somerset House – perfectly-timed for this project.

Brief

Bring this range of plush food-themed toys to life in colourful bakery-themed sets.

The character animation needed to convey a sense of each character’s personality. Fruit Cup Tigger bounces in, Macaron Marie moves elegantly, Scone Simba is very energetic, Berry Cupcake Stitch is an alien, so they come in from top of frame and Pancake Minnie, is a pancake, so she needs to flip onto the plate.

Simple sets with a bold colour palette and reinforce the food world that these toys come from.

Process

We received two of each toy. The first thing we did was to rig the characters so we could animate subtle movement, such as the feet and ears. We also had a wire inside the bodies so we could squash and stretch the characters that were jumping.

Preparing the sets was next, using a colour palette that would accompany the toys and food items specific to each character.

Lastly we create test animations for each film so we have a tight plan for production and all stakeholders are aware of what we were shooting.

Munchlings rigged Munchlings derigged

The animation took place over three days on two stages. One shot for each of the five characters, and the more complex group shot.

With everything animated we removed the rigs in post production before handing over the clean masters to Disney to grade and add motion design and music with sound design.
